MUSTANG '69 MACH 1 300hp

On this car we decided to find out what do we exactly know about cars. We took standard Mustang 1969, fastback, and rebuilt it to become MACH 1.

It has 351 cu in Windsor engine, with hand crafted cylinder heads. We slightly ported heads and with flat pistons compression ratio is up to 10:1. We had to buy electronic ignition system, and stronger ignition cables. Also, colder spark plugs where needed. Camshaft is a lot better than factory one, complete with stronger valve springs. Valves where made customly - stainless steel was used for exhaust valves. Holly, 4brl carburetor, with 500cfm gives all the best to the car.

We could put in the car some bigger engine (we have big blocks on stock), but the moment you do so, you added some extra weight on the car. Manifold is Edelbrock aluminum one, a little raised, just to make this car street legal. Right now, we are thinking that battery should be trunk mounted, just to make even distribution of car weight. Also, we stripped off old steering gear and replaced it with aftermarket steering rack. It is now very good in handling, but has it's set backs, because the radious of turn is now much bigger. We changed transmission with a Ford 5 speed manual one. Also, propeler shaft had to be made stronger.

Exhaust on this car is made with only one mufler per side, and it has hedders and X-pipe to make better suction in the system, for high rpm's. Should we mention that used material was stainless steel.

We aslo bought aftermarket break system with discs on all 4 wheels, but factory Ford system seemed to be better. Only modification on brake system was vacuum canister, that we put to make stable pressure for booster. This engine has a lot lower vacuum compared to factory one.

Rear axle is converted to possy traction, and traction bars are added to control body movement on leaf springs. After all that, and "milions" of slight adjustments, we got ourselves a car that is beautifull to ride, and that looks great.

We start up all car engines once a week. Jus to make sure that there are no sticky valves and sticky lifters in those big rumblers. After engines gain operating temperature, we go for a ride in summer time, or if the day is nice and dry. In case of a winter, we run it up, shut it down, and close the garrage doors.

It was a nice day on oldtimer gathering in our city.
